Larry joined Kahler Slater in 1986 and for more than 25 years, he has led our higher education practice in designing learning environments for all health professions, including dental, medical, nursing, and health sciences. The impact of Larry’s work is evidenced by over 40 completed projects around the country, totaling well over a half a billion dollars over a decade’s time. A few notable projects he has designed include UW-Madison’s School of Nursing, Texas A&M University’s Clinic & Education Building, Mary Baldwin University’s Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences, UT Health San Antonio’s Center for Oral Health Care and Research, and the recently completed Miami Dade College’s Center for Learning & Innovation Simulation. These projects exemplify the role architecture plays in offering real-world, hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students.

Larry serves on multiple national boards and is currently a Board Director for the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), Chair of the Board for the UW-Milwaukee Foundation to advance philanthropy for student success and is also on the UW-Milwaukee College of Health Sciences Dean Advisory Board. Throughout his career, he has led numerous studios, conducted lectures and discussions at UW-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP), and has authored articles on the impact that design has on planning for new curriculums, inter-professional education, and collaborative practices.

“The importance of allowing students to learn by doing, rather than just reacting to a lecture format, cannot be over emphasized. Allowing students to experiment and take risks, with oversight and guidance offering insightful examples of building design options that impact entire communities, leads to a culture of creative inquiry. The collaborative energy of faculty, students and staff is inspiring, and I greatly enjoy being part of a team that fuels this excitement for the next generation.”
